  4.     The noxious cloud hanging over Imhausen-Chemie keeps growing
  5. thicker. Under fire for its alleged complicity in the building
  6. of a poison-gas factory in Libya, the West German chemical
  7. company is besieged by criticism from its own employees, who
  8. fear their jobs will be lost unless President Jurgen
  9. Hippenstiel-Imhausen resigns. Two weeks ago Imhausen's
  10. second-in-command took a drug overdose in an apparent suicide
  11. attempt. Now comes news that the firm is involved in the
  12. illegal production and sale of MDMA, a designer drug commonly
  13. known as "ecstasy."

  15.     German prosecutors say Imhausen has supplied U.S. drug
  16. traffickers with 374 lbs. of MDMA, worth up to $27 million on
  17. the street. Two Americans and one Imhausen employee have been
  18. arrested. While Imhausen has admitted manufacturing the drug,
  19. company officials claim they were unaware the substance was
  20. illegal. Ironically, Imhausen could face stiffer penalties if
  21. convicted of breaking local narcotics laws than for helping a
  22. foreign country make deadly chemical weapons.
